I understand that money is tight right now, but its getting to the point where It’s effecting my school work [I'm in summer school right now] like there have been times where i have given up on assignments due to the fact that i can read the board to see what I’m supposed to do. I feel so helpless when I can read something. I just want to cry, what can I do?

Tell the teacher, and when the teacher tells you to tell your mom or dad, let her know you already have told your mom and don’t be ashamed to tell your teacher that you guys don’t have money for glasses. Your teacher probably knows a way to help you get glasses for low cost, and can help your mom by telling her too. I’m not trying to get you to "tattle" on your mom, but apparently she’s not taking your needs into consideration. If you cant do your school work, then she needs to figure out some way to help you. The teacher can have a conference with your mom, and let her know what she needs to do for you.

Most importantly, you need to let your teacher know so that he or she doesn’t think that you are becoming a bad student because you are not trying, let the teacher know that you have a problem. They are there to help.

Any optometrist should be able to fit these contacts – there are no "specialists" for astigmatis contact lenses.

I’ve heard that the requirements for LASIK are a thick cornea with enough tissue—I have VERY bad eyesight (-7 and -5)…does this mean I have a thinner cornea and less tissue?

Also, do eye doctors check your corneal thickness when you get your yearly eyesight tested out? THANKS!

Yes they do check your corneas and the overall health of your eye.

I am not all that sure about lasik surgery as I have only heard of people who have been like -2.00 who have had dramatic improvement. My friend has a similar prescription to yours (-8.00 & -6.5) and her eye dr (who is one of the best in the country) actually thinks LASIK is just a money maker with limited benefit and no evidence for longterm effectiveness or safety. He recommended that she has a lens inplant instead as it is permanent and safety proven and satisfaction guaranteed (other than usual risks of surgery). You should go see a reputable opthalmologist about it and not just go to one at a LASIK centre (they get paid to recommend LASIK) and investigate all your options thoroughly with the advice of an eye dr that is not going to make profit off you regardless of what your decision is. Don’t just go down the LASIK route as ‘blindly’ (excuse the pun!) just because it is the most well known and popular thing right now. Honestly, I have known at least nine people who have had it and as I said before, only one of them were happy and she had a low prescription ot start with. All the others have had little benefit or the ‘benefit’ had worn off over time.

BTW, you have bad eye sight but not VERY bad and if LASIK goes wrong you could end up with VERY bad eyes. I have a much higher prescription than you do (-10.00)- so I understand how inconvenient it is to have life a blur beyond a few inches from your face. But check out your options thoroughly first.

He is being sent to a specialist and we recieved a copy of the letter saying that is what he has. I have no clue what that means and I need someone to break it down for me so I know what is going on with his eyes. Any info will be appreciated.

cataract is simply the opacity in the lens , some times accumulation of proteins or enlarment of the epithelial cells inside the lens . the lens consists of central portioncalled lens capsule which grows with age in size , the nucleus is surrounded by the cortex and the cortex is surrounded by the capsule , anteriorly the caapsule is called aterior capsule and posteriorly towards the vitrous its called psoterior capsule ,
in posterior subcapsular cataract mostly occur with advancing age the nucleus increases in size and hence cause opacity in the lens , when the opacity is in the cortex near the posterior capsule this condidtion is called posterior subcapsular cataract ..
the ischemia simply means when you have low oxygen to any thing it is injured , ischemia of the optic nerve means the infarction of the part of optic nerve due to insufficient or blocked blood supply to it by the short posterior ciliary arteries ..
