What degree do I need to become an eye doctor?

April 4th, 2010 | by admin |

Its my first year in college & I’m hoping to get my associates degree. I don’t want to do any type of surgeries or anything like that. I just wanted to do eye exams and diagnose eye problems and stuff like that. I’m not sure what I should get my associates in, arts or science? And what other schooling would I need?

Ophthalmology is a branch of medicine which deals with the diseases and surgery of the visual pathways, including the eye, hairs, and areas surrounding the eye, such as the lacrimal system and eyelids.

It sounds like you’re interested in optometry rather than ophthalmology. You’ll want to speak with your college advisor about the required courses for entry into a school of optometry, as there is a considerable bloc of science and math courses you’ll need. You can still get your undergraduate degree in arts if you wish, but most people find it easier to meld the required science courses into a science major.

Ophthalmologists are medical doctors (MDs) who diagnose and treat diseases and disorders of the eyes and related structures.

Optometrists are licensed practitioners (not MDs) who specialize in disorders of vision. They do vision exams, diagnose vision disorders, and prescribe lenses.

Opticians are specialists in grinding lenses and makeing eyeglasses.

if you are willing to go the distance to pursue an MD, then you would follow a pre med plan of coursework. I’m posting links on the other two specialties……………………..
